Replacing Yardman Mower Parts

Posted on August 28th, 2010 in Lawn Mower by lawnmower  Tagged ,

Finding and replacing Yardman mower parts is not difficult thankfully, because no matter how good you treat your equipment, it will break down at one point or another. Fortunately though, if you are using a Yardman machine then you can have the peace of mind in knowing that they are worth repairing. After doing so, you will most likely go on to get many more good years of use out of it. Even though that is the case, it can be expensive to replace parts sometimes, so knowing the best place to buy them is crucial.

The cost of repairs and parts all depends on what type of mower you’re using, For example, if you’re using one of the classic walk behind types, you’ll likely need new grass catchers as you wear your machine out. You might need to replace the clutch cables at one point as well. For those that are using ride on lawn tractors, you’re more likely to need a new transmission, idlers, or steering parts. With the zero turn riders, it will probably be something with the belts or pulleys. The point is, they all will probably need to be worked on the longer you use them.

As for finding those parts, it’s really not that difficult. You just have have to find authorized dealers such as Sears, Wal-Mart, Northern Tool, Menards, and even Amazon. Considering how prevalent all these companies are, it shouldn’t be too difficult for you to find exactly what you’re looking for. You’ll have found the exact part you need in no time and hopefully you’ll have the repair manuals as well. If so, you can do the work and get your equipment ready for use. If not, there are professionals for the job.

Overall, you will find that getting Yardman Mower Parts is not a bad thing, because it’s saving you the expense and the trouble of having to buy a new machine altogether. It’s really a good idea to continue to do repairs for as long as you can to avoid having to buy new equipment, and with Yardman devices this is possible.

How to Buy a Used Ride-on Lawn Mower

Posted on August 25th, 2010 in Lawn Mower by lawnmower  Tagged

Are you sick of pushing a lawn mower around the yard for hours, but just can’t afford the high price tag of a new ride on lawn mower?  If this sounds like you, then your best option may be buying a used one.  Although a new mower might last you a little longer, buying a used ride on lawn mower has some great advantages as well.

One advantage of buying used is that you can easily find a better riding mower than you could afford to buy new.  You can get one with a more powerful engine, wider mowing deck, more durable components, and even a zero turning radius.  Superior lawn mower tractors tend to last longer than their cheaply-made counterparts, so buying a great used mower might be smarter than buying a cheap new one.

When looking for a used ride on lawn mower, keep in mind that many sellers also have attachments that came with the machine.  You can often negotiate to purchase the mower and either get the attachments for free, or pay a small price for them.  Since attachments generally cost hundreds of dollars each when bought new, getting them thrown into the deal is a great bargain if you need them. Common attachments to look for are baggers, mulching kits, pull-behind carts, and snow throwers.

When shopping for used ride on lawn mowers, here are a few things to check:

Look for signs of rust on the mower. Rusty tractors can fall apart pretty quickly
Make sure the engine isn’t leaking oil or gas, and it starts and runs smoothly
Check the tires for wear to avoid having to replace costly tires.
Inspect the belts on both the engine and under the cutting deck for wear.  A major cause of lawn mower breakdowns is a snapped belt.
Drive around the yard and make sure it brakes and switches gears smoothly and easily.  Ride on lawn mowers can have either automatic or manual gear shifts.
Where to find a good used mower

You can find used ride on mowers both online and in print classifieds.  Sites like craiglist.org and kijiji.com are good places to look.  In addition, your local lawn mower repair shop might have some good used mowers for sale as well.  Although they might cost more than buying them from an individual, there are some great advantages to buying one at a store.  First, the store most certainly checked out the mower and made any necessary repairs.  Second, a shop will most likely give you at least a one year warranty, so you will have some peace of mind in case it breaks down.  You won’t get this if you buy it from an individual.  Depending on the type of ride on mower that you want, expect to pay anywhere from a hundred dollars up to a few thousand dollars for a barely used top of the line lawn tractor.  Sometimes buying two or three used ride on mowers can work out cheaper in the long run than buying one new one.

I did a few too many wheelies I guess I heard a loud pop, or crack noise after a two ft high wheely while mowing the lawn. After driving around mowing the lawn starting & stopping was making a grinding noise, I knew I broke a ring gear ! or pinon. After removal I found dirty fluid, metal shavings, missing tooth on the ring gear and damaged spider gears – Wow! remember this is a stock riding mower ! When getting serviced last year one guy said he never seen a mower run so hard – All I can say is thanks! :) Now I repair my own mower – as you see! Also I do a partial disassembly till I get my parts “still waiting” I’m changing a bunch of parts spider gears, ring gear, differential assembly, grease, hydraulic fluid, new filter, mayby pinon “not sure yet” My gears all got chewed up – oh and maybe a new drivebelt, and brakes I’m also sanding the mower down – the dents, dings, scratches did not look good- updates later. Thanks for watching

What’s With the Mulching Lawn Mower?

Posted on August 22nd, 2010 in Lawn Mower by lawnmower  Tagged , ,

More and more people are becoming sensible nowadays. At a time where the campaigns for recycling and saving the mother earth are intensifying, many have opted to go out of their way to help protect the environment. Segregating your waste is one thing, but using a mulching lawn mower could be another way to keep you from adding up to the community waste pile.

One thing about cutting grass is that you have to keep the cut grass in the bag attached in any ordinary lawn mower so you could easily dump the contents later. Most often, when one has no intention to take his part in preserving the environment, he or she will be using plastic, which is already a big no-no nowadays, with the growing pile of non-biodegradable materials already being burdened by mother earth. But with the need for a waste free way to cut grass and beautify a lawn, came the invention of the mulching lawn mower. It doesn’t require you to think of where to dump the cut grass; instead, it already pushes the cut grass into compost.

If you are a dedicated gardener, you know what this means: less hassle on your part; and more fertilizer for the soil and plants. This particular type of mower is made to leave behind thinly cut grass clippings that could be left on the lawn without that hideous bulk that you could normally see after a lawn has been mowed with an ordinary lawn mower. Another thing is that even though you left the cut grass over the lawn, the grass underneath would still grow well.

There may be many types of lawn mowers available to professional landscape artists and hobbyists alike, but if you would want to do less in cutting the lawn but do more in enriching the soil, the mulching lawn mower is the one for you. Of course it will cost you more than what you would usually spend for a simpler type, but the results could be more than you expected. Imagine mowing the lawn without getting stressed and not thinking about where to dump the waste afterwards. This will surely be a reward to anyone who loves his or her lawn but hates the waste and the tedious work.

Of course, the efficiency of this particular type of lawn mower depends on the operator. If you would want the cut grass to decompose faster, you could time the mowing frequency so only half an inch of the grass will be cut, thus resulting in finer clippings. It is also important to make sure that the mower blade is sharp before cutting the lawn. Refrain from mowing the lawn when it has just rained or you have just watered the grass, since this will result in a clumpy muddle. Remember to keep it cool. Enjoy a refreshing drink every once in a while during the mowing process. Keep in mind that a mulching lawn mower will not work fine if the operator is hurrying the entire process.

How to Winterize a Riding Lawn Mower

Posted on August 21st, 2010 in Lawn Mower by lawnmower  Tagged ,

A riding lawn mower is a big investment, and should be protected. For many, the winter months mean putting mowers away and not giving them another thought until the spring season comes around. Before putting a rider into storage, though, take a few simple steps to help maintain it over the winter.

First, drain the fuel from the gas tank and the oil from the crankcase. Always recycle the oil and dispose of the fuel properly. Replace the oil with new oil that is the correct grade for the mower. Fill the gas tank with fuel that has been pre-treated with a stabilizer. This will keep the fuel from gumming up in the tank.

After filling up the fuel tank with the new fuel, run the engine for a few minutes. This process will cycle the new fuel and additive through the riding lawn mower’s system and the carburetor.

Next, remove the spark plug and pour about half an ounce of oil into the cylinder. Replace the spark plug, and remove the spark plug wire. Complete this process for both spark plugs on a twin cylinder engine. Now, crank the system slowly to distribute the oil.

Lubricate all points where friction occurs.

Always make sure to charge the battery fully prior to storage. To follow best practices, make sure that the battery is charged every two months during the winter. Starting the mower and running at full throttle once a month for 20 to 30 minutes helps to charge the battery and to circulate the fuel through the carburetor. After running, top off the fuel tank with pre-treated stabilized fuel.

Once the charging is completed, disconnect the battery and if the riding lawn mower will be stored for an extended period of time, remove the battery completely. Be sure to store the battery in a warm dry place and away from any potential flames or sparks.

Also be sure to store the lawn mower in a clean, dry place. As with the battery, keep the mower away from stoves or heaters that use pilot lights, devices that can produce a spark, and corrosive materials like fertilizer.

Lastly, if the riding lawn mower comes equipped with pneumatic tires, make sure to park it on cardboard to keep the tires off the cold concrete.
